Guatemala: Adopted child stolen
GUATEMALA CITY, July 24 (UPI) -- A genetic test has proved a child adopted through Guatemala's state system was kidnapped, officials said.
A baby adopted by an American woman was taken from Ana Escobar last year, DNA tests showed, El Periodico newspaper reported Thursday.
The child reportedly had false identification papers though the test proved the child belonged to Escobar.
Guatemala is second to China for adoptions by U.S. citizens.
Last year, 4,700 Guatemalan children were adopted by U.S. residents, Guatemalan adoption officials said.
